How To Install a Ceiling Fan

Step 1
Check your state and country laws regarding ceiling fans. In most cases, such as in the United States, you need to use a metal junction box. Building codes in your area may also specify how low your fan is allowed to hang
Step 2
Turn off the power in your home. This can be done at the circuit breaker.
Step 3
Remove your old light fixture or find the center of your room if there is currently no lighting fixture.
Step 4
Unpack your new ceiling fan from its box and check to make sure no pieces are broken. Paint or otherwise decorate if desired.

Step 1
Cut a hole large enough for the new junction box if there is not already one in your ceiling.
Step 2
Remove the old plastic junction box if necessary.
Step 3
Screw the new metal junction box to the joist or beam in the ceiling. You may need to use a header if there is not a place to screw in the junction box.
Step 4
Hang the bracket that will hold the fan on the junction box.
Step 5
Patch the hole in the ceiling so that it can't be seen with the fan is installed. In some cases, the fan has a large cover, so you may not have to do much patchwork.
Step 6
Assemble the fan blades using the instructions in the box. Follow the directions completely to get the best and safest results.
Step 7
Wire the unit according to the directions that came with the fan. Make sure to ground the fan with the ground wires, which will either be green or bare copper.
Step 8
Hang the unit.
Step 9
program remote control if desired.
